Keep your house clean all the time!
The struggle is real, my friends! I had always wanted to know how I could keep my house clean. No matter how often I cleaned and tidied, I struggled to find things at home and there would always be miscellaneous clutter to put away. All of the stuff that I had moved would magically reappear to taunt me and the cycle would infuriatingly start again. I needed to know how to keep my house clean all the time!
Somehow the solution found me! My son and I stayed up late one night in the summer holidays watching Netflix. We came across Marie Kondo’s series ‘Tidying up’ and decided to give it a go. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing, Marie was infectious. She was truly excited about tidying! She appeared to be serene, non-judgemental and experienced in her craft. Her methods intrigued me, take ALL of your clothes out of your wardrobe and discard what doesn’t spark you joy?!? WHAAAT?? Little did I know that Marie Kondo and her KonMari method would change my life!
Certainly I’d never really thought about the difference between tidying and cleaning. I’d bunched it all into one group, moving the same stuff from one spot to another and cleaning at the same time. Having kids, clutter would appear on every clear surface just to be put away again. It definitely made the cleaning process more time consuming and annoyed my minimalist husband.
Keep my house clean by doing one huge tidying festival
Step 1 Start your tidying festival
The tidying festival is a commitment to do it once and to complete it within six months. Tidy by category, rather than location. Further, there is a specific order to follow – clothing, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items) then sentimental items. Most importantly, by imagining your ideal lifestyle, tidying and discarding will clear the way for this to become reality. It is important to follow the category order and not jump ahead. Don’t take large breaks, just keep going to reach the end goal. After your tidying is finished, you may occasionally reassess your belongings but this will be quick and effortless.
Step 2: Learn to fold the KonMari way
Sorting through my belongings, I realised that I had been holding on to clothes that I simply didn’t like, were itchy, ill-fitting and unflattering. Out they went! Marie says to thank the items when discarding them as they served a purpose to which we are grateful. I started to fold and store my clothes in the KonMari (Marie Kondo’s) way. My bewildered family looked on, wondering what the heck was going on. I spoke to my lovely Benefit eyebrow shaper and she had been following Marie Kondo for awhile. She advised me to purchase Marie’s books from Kinokuniya bookshop as they are a wealth of information. We continue to share tips about our tidying festivals!
Step 3: Read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying & Spark Joy
The first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, was an overall summary of the KonMari method. I’m currently reading the second book, Spark Joy. I am enjoying this book the most, as it very detailed, chock full of diagrams and extensive information on how to get through each category.
Buy Marie Kondo’s books at Kinokuniya Australia, they are both currently in stock: Buy here!
Step 3: Learn how to spark joy
At first, I really struggled with determining if an item sparked joy. It is a feeling or a ‘zing’ that you feel when holding the item, it makes you happy to see it or use it. Marie does say that this skill is honed along the way, which is why sentimental items are left until last. I have finished clothing, including the children and husband’s and am working my way through books.
KonMari is the way to get a clean house….that stays clean!!
I highly recommend watching Marie Kondo’s Netflix series and/or reading her books. Consequently you will discover that you have accumulated far too many things, buy things that you have never used, have cupboards full of junk, keep things that you might use ‘one day’ and wonder why you don’t have a place for everything that you use to make life easier for yourself. Since starting on this journey, I have been amazed to see just how many things I have discarded and haven’t missed.
As a result of following the KonMari method, I am finding joy simply by opening my wardrobe and seeing the clothes that I actually want to wear. In addition, I don’t have baskets of clothing sitting around anymore waiting to be put away, as they were the clothes that I didn’t want to wear. I am recreating the spaces in our home to be enjoyable places that spark joy and provide a use for the way we live.
Marie Kondo has truly changed my life and the way my family lives. I never imagined that by tidying I would have a clearer mind and focus, life would be significantly less stressful and I would experience so much joy. Best of all I know know how to keep my house clean all the time! I’d love to hear from you if you are starting or currently doing your tidying festival! Have you become addicted to it as well and how long is it taking you? Finally, do you feel like you need help to organise your home? Thanks for reading 👍😁
